Why you should be following the USL

As soccer continues to grow in popularity in the United States, more and more fans are discovering the thrill of following their favorite teams in the lower leagues. While many soccer fans are familiar with the MLS, fewer are aware of the intricate structure of the USL and its three tiers: Championship, League One, and League Two.

For those unfamiliar with the USL, the Championship is the highest level of play, featuring teams from across the country competing for the league title. League One, on the other hand, is a newer league that features a mix of professional and amateur teams, while League Two is primarily a developmental league for young players looking to hone their skills.

Despite the different levels of play, one thing that sets the USL apart from other soccer leagues is the possibility of promotion and relegation between the different tiers. While pro/rel has yet to be fully implemented in the US, many believe that the structure of the USL could serve as a blueprint for how it could be done in the future.

One team that made the leap from USL to MLS is FC Cincinnati. After a successful stint in the USL, the team joined the MLS in 2019 and has quickly become a fan favorite in the league. This success story serves as a testament to the talent and potential that can be found in the lower leagues, and it's just one example of why fans should start paying attention to the USL.

For those interested in exploring the USL, the US Open Cup is a great entry point. This tournament features teams from all levels of American soccer, giving fans a chance to see how the different leagues stack up against each other. It's also a chance to discover new teams and rivalries, and to experience the passion and excitement of soccer at all levels of play.

As the USL continues to grow and evolve, it's becoming increasingly clear that it will play a crucial role in the development of American soccer. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a newcomer to the sport, this is the season to start following the lower leagues in America and to discover all that the USL has to offer.

I think USL teams getting promoted to the MLS would be massive for the growth of the sport and especially the USL

Even if the promotion and relegation just happened between the USL leagues it would instantly make the three lower leagues more interesting in my opinion. And, since the clubs in the USL are much closer in size, it wouldn’t be a huge deal to ownership to rise and fall. I hope they do it, even if it doesn’t involve the MLS
